As I await the running of The Preakness later on today, I am reminded of a conversation that I had with a friend regarding the jewel of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby. Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, I often forget that the rest of the world does not stop on the first Saturday in May to turn their attention to mint juleps, big hats, seersucker suits, betting odds, and, of course, the fastest two minutes in sports. Leave it to my friend to remind me that not everyone embraces and understands the sport of kings.
Irregardless of the fact that this is a famous event steeped in pageantry and tradition, my friend still posed the question, “So, if the race only lasts two minutes, what do you do all day leading up to the race at the track?” Bless their heart, some people simply lack horse sense.
