Tis the season to be jolly and . . . sick.  This week, the staff at the day shelter for homeless men where I work could be divided into three groups-people getting over being sick, people in the throes of being sick, and people trying to avoid getting sick.  We were not fully staffed any day this week, and this was not lost on our guests.  The gentlemen notice when a staff member is not at work, and they are quick to voice their concern.  This morning, one gentleman showed his concern in a practical and sweet way.

Stan is an older gentleman who greets me each morning, and our chats always involve Stan inquiring about my health and offering me advice about taking good care of myself.  This morning, he asked me where our absent staff members were, and he was sorry to hear that they…
