Going Right

Going Right

Recently, my amazing friend, Laura, posed the question, What’s going right in your life?  The question was simple and straight forward, yet it has taken me until now to formulate a response.  My delay in answering this question is not an indication that I do not have anything going right in my life, as I do.  There was something more to it than that.

If that question had been posed to me in the not so distant past, I would have struggled to come up with an answer, even though I had plenty of things going right in my life.  Her question reminded me of a very important lesson, one that I continue to learn and master.  There is always something going right, even when everything seems to be going wrong.  Always.

During the best of times, it is easy to list what we are grateful for and what is working well.  During the worst of times, it definitely is not as easy, but it is possible. I am learning to acknowledge the challenges and pain that life serves up, sometimes in heaping doses, without allowing them to be my only point of reference.  It does not have to be all right or all wrong, as they can, and do, coexist.

While my life is not, and never will be, perfect, there are a great many things going right these days:

I have a very close relationship with both of my adolescent daughters, and they are beautiful inside and out and simply extraordinary.

I am surrounded by a loving and supportive family and a dynamic, diverse group of friends who love and accept me unconditionally.

I remain in remission for breast cancer and ulcerative colitis, and I intend to keep those streaks, as well as myself, alive and well!

I am settled into our new home, and I love it more and more each day.

I am enjoying my new job.  It is challenging and rewarding, and it is truly a great opportunity.

I am alive, and I am well.

All is well.

That’s another story . . .

  1. Great insight for the day. I may throw this question out to my four sisters. Too much negativity in some of their lives. Thanks!

  2. Great message… it’s all about perspective!
